Camp 2010
IMPORTANT ELEMENT CAMP INFORMATION
Dear parents of Element students-
For many years, summer camp has been an important event in the High School Ministry of Savannah Christian Church. Every year during the week of camp, we see students make a life-changing connection with Jesus. Last year was no exception.
In 2009 we moved to a new location, Camp Bob Cooper in Summerton, South Carolina, primarily because we had outgrown our old facility. Instead of being limited to 100 students, we were able to take almost 150 high school students to camp last year! However, like any first-time experience, there were some things we learned that would improve for camp next year. The great news is that we will be able to make those improvements while returning to Camp Bob Cooper, meaning that we can continue to grow in the number of students we take to camp!
Like last year, both Blitz (junior high) and Element will have completely separate weeks of camp at the same location during the same week: July 12-16. The cost of camp will remain at $265 this year, and we encourage parents to make smaller monthly payments if that is helpful. Also, please know that we have scholarship funds available for both events. We don’t want any student to miss out for financial reasons, so please ask for a scholarship application (before trip the trip deposit is due) if that would be helpful to you.
Just to make you aware of some specifics, here are answers to some of the concerns from camp last year, and improvements for Element Camp 2010:
1) New dorms – Last year a storm literally destroyed one of the girls’ dorms just a month before our week of camp, meaning that some students were shuffled into a housing situation that wasn’t ideal. Since July, new dorm facilities have been constructed to replace the old building, meaning that everyone will have more room. Our high school girls will have the newest and best facilities this year.
2) Improved cafeteria scenario – This year, Element will be in the cafeteria by ourselves, so no long lines and crowding! On top of that, we get to choose our own menu this year, and we’ll give our students the chance to vote for what they’d like to eat!
3) More opportunities for “fun stuff” during free time – This year, we will have the chance for many more students to participate in things like paintball and the high ropes course. There will be more leaders trained to run these events, and a new schedule will make it possible for more students to do these things more often.
4) Health concerns – Last year, there were concerns about students who experienced flu-like symptoms after camp. To be clear, Camp Bob Cooper did not have reports of similar problems before or after our week of camp. In addition, following the news in the months after camp made it clear that this experience was common across the country, and not tied to our camp location.
We hope your son or daughter will join us at Element Camp this year, and we want to help you as parents in any way we can. Please contact us at any time if you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding your student and the Element High School Ministry by calling 629-4767 or emailing element@savannahchristian.com.
